What is the draw to watch reality television shows? Most of them are not, in fact, reality. For example, the Real Housewives series. These women live in afluent areas of the U.S., obsessed with how they look (plastic surgery and botox are common), and crave the 15 minutes of fame the t.v. show gives them. And, I still continue to watch. Why? I find myself getting frustrated each time I watch an episode. I'm drawn in as if it is a requirement of some sort. These women have no clue...family and full time work being the important aspect of reality living. As well, they don't show themselves as caring individuals - rarely do they mention volunteering, charities, or other aspects of the world we live in that neekd noticing. Reality - homelessness, hunger, war - these are just a few examples of reality that need more noticing. My favorite for reassuring myself of what is real - Anderson Cooper. I'll blog about him later :)
I will admit to also watching Keeping up with the Kardashians. At least this family participates in charity events and work on some level. However, they are still obsessed with their appearance and other means beyond the middle class and us regular folk.
What is the obsession with us normal folks - who continually watch and allow ourselves to be frustrated with each time we watch? Sometimes, I will admit, watching some reality shows provide a "thoughtless" point to turn off my mind from the day. What is the term - mindless entertainment.
Goal - stop watching these reality shows that are meaningless beyond the mindless entertainment realm!
